The Historic Newborn Schoolhouse
This historic building on Hwy 142 dates back to 1924, and replaces the original Newborn High School, which was housed in the former Palmyra Institute building. It was an active school until the mid 1950's. After years of standing empty, then used as a community center, there were much needed repairs. In 2009 the roof was declared unsafe and the expense was beyond anyone's pocket. Several generous individuals stepped forward with donations and bequests, particularly the Guy Jones Memorial Fund and the Jeanette Adams Zeigler Charitable Remainder Trust! The town of Newborn now owns the school and rents the facility out for community and private events. A non profit, the Newborn Area Heritage Trust, Inc, helps maintain it and hosts community events throughout the year.
